Step 1
Survey The Run
We identify wood or vinyl, note loose boards and tired fasteners, and check the post bases where mulch and bed soil bank up.
The fence is the backdrop to the whole garden, and it is usually the last thing anyone thinks to clean. It makes a bigger difference than people expect.
Learn More About This ServiceMadeira properties tend to come with proper gardens, and most of them are framed by a fence that has been quietly going green for several seasons. It is the backdrop to everything you look at from the kitchen window, it runs the length of the lot, and because it sits in shade for most of the day under established planting and tree cover, it grows algae and mildew readily. The face you look at is often the worse of the two, which is why the difference after cleaning tends to surprise people.
Wood and vinyl both want a light touch for different reasons. Wood fencing is soft, and high pressure raises the grain, splinters the surface, and leaves it fuzzy, which looks worse than the algae did and then traps dirt faster afterward. Vinyl will not splinter but it streaks, and a concentrated jet can crack it where the panels meet the rails. Both clean properly with a solution that kills the growth and a controlled low-pressure rinse, which on a long run is also simply faster than fighting it.
Post bases are worth a look while we are there. Where planting beds, mulch, and leaf litter bank up against the bottom of a post, wood sits permanently wet at the point carrying the most load, and a fence usually fails there long before the boards give out. Cleaning does not fix that, but it does reveal it, and knowing about a soft post before it leans into your neighbor's garden is worth the mention.
A clean fence is the backdrop to every planting bed and patio you own. It lifts the entire garden rather than just one boundary.
A gentle rinse leaves wood smooth rather than raised and fuzzy, which is precisely why a pressure-washed fence re-soils so much faster.
While we are working we look at where posts meet the ground and tell you what we find, well before a panel starts to lean.
If you intend to stain or seal afterward, a thorough clean and a genuine dry are what let that finish key into the wood at all.
Step 1
We identify wood or vinyl, note loose boards and tired fasteners, and check the post bases where mulch and bed soil bank up.
Step 2
Planting along the fence line is pre-wet and protected, and we set up so solution and rinse stay on your side of the line.
Step 3
Cleaning solution goes on to kill the algae and mildew, then it is left to do the work before a drop of rinse water is used.
Step 4
The run is rinsed gently end to end, borders are rinsed down, and we walk the boundary with you to see how both faces came out.
Can a wood fence be pressure washed instead?
It can, and we would advise against it. High pressure raises the grain, splinters the surface, and leaves the wood fuzzy, which then traps dirt and grows algae faster than before. Solution and low pressure avoid that and get a better result anyway.
Can you clean my neighbor's side of the fence too?
With their agreement and access, yes. On a shared boundary it usually makes sense, since a fence cleaned on one face only still looks half done from either garden. It is worth a quick word with them before we schedule.
What does fence cleaning cost in Madeira?
It follows the length of the run and the material. Estimates are free. Fence cleaning is often booked alongside a house wash or patio clean, and combining them into one visit is cheaper than two separate trips.
My fence is vinyl and has green streaks. Will they come off?
Usually yes. Green streaking on vinyl is algae and it responds well to a cleaning solution. What will not come off is chalking or UV fading in the vinyl itself, because that is the material breaking down rather than something sitting on it. We can tell the difference on site.
Should I seal the fence after cleaning?
On wood it is worth considering, especially the shaded face. The fence has to be fully dry first, which takes a few days in an enclosed garden. We will tell you honestly whether the wood is in a condition to hold a finish or whether the money is better spent elsewhere.
