Freshly sealed paver patio at a Blue Ash home

Paver Sealing And Re-Sanding In Blue Ash, OH To Lock The Joints

New pavers should be sealed before the first hard winter. Older ones usually need their joints refilled first, because empty joints are what let pavers shift.

Paver Sealing And Joint Re-Sanding For Blue Ash Homes

Blue Ash has paver hardscape at both ends of the age range, and each needs something different. The newer construction around Summit Park comes with patios, walkways, and entries that are still in good shape, and the smart move there is sealing early, before the first few winters of road salt and freeze-thaw set staining that never fully lifts.

Established paver patios have the opposite issue. Years of rain, runoff, and enthusiastic pressure washing wash the joint sand out a little at a time, and once those joints are empty the stones lose their support. That is when pavers start rocking underfoot, edges creep outward, and weeds and ants move into the gaps.

The fix is to refill the joints with polymeric sand and then seal. Polymeric sand binds once activated, so it stays in the joint rather than washing straight back out, and a joint-stabilizing sealer locks it in place. Sealing over empty joints just preserves the problem, which is why we always look at the joints before quoting the sealer.

Why Blue Ash Homeowners Re-Sand And Seal Pavers

  • Protects New Hardscape Early

For newer Summit Park area homes, sealing before the first winters keeps salt and organic staining out of pavers that are still clean.

  • Stops Pavers From Shifting

Full, stabilized joints hold neighboring stones against each other, which reduces the rocking and creeping edges that come with empty joints.

  • Cuts Down Weeds And Ants

Weeds root in open joints and ants tunnel through loose sand. Filled, bound joints remove most of that opportunity.

  • Resists Winter Salt

Sealed pavers shed the road salt that gets tracked across driveways and entries, instead of absorbing it into the stone.

Our Blue Ash Paver Sealing And Re-Sanding Process

Step 1

Clean The Pavers And Clear The Joints

The surface is cleaned at paver-appropriate pressure, and weeds plus old washed-out joint material are removed.

Step 2

Let Everything Dry

Both the stones and the joints need to dry, because polymeric sand and sealer applied over damp pavers will not set correctly.

Step 3

Re-Sand The Joints

Polymeric sand is swept into the joints and worked down so each one is filled to the proper depth rather than just topped off.

Step 4

Activate And Seal

The sand is set, then a joint-stabilizing sealer is applied evenly and coverage is checked across the whole surface.

Paver Sealing & Re-Sanding FAQs

  • My pavers are only a few years old. Is it too early to seal?

No, and early is the ideal time. Sealing pavers while they are still clean prevents the salt and organic staining that is much harder to remove once it has set. Newer Blue Ash hardscape is exactly the case where sealing pays off most.

  • Do I need re-sanding as well as sealing?

Usually, on an established patio. We look at the joints first. If they are washed down below the paver chamfer, sealing alone locks in a problem rather than solving it, so the sand goes back first.

  • Why do my pavers rock when I step on them?

Empty joints. The sand between pavers is what holds each stone against its neighbors. Once it washes out the stones have nothing bracing them laterally, so they move. Refilling and stabilizing the joints is the fix.

  • Will this stop weeds growing between the pavers completely?

It greatly reduces them but nothing is absolute. Filled, bound joints leave weeds almost nowhere to root, though seeds that blow in and settle in surface debris can still sprout, which is why occasional maintenance still helps.

"Jason did great work on our home's driveway and front walkway. I didn't even notice just how dark some spots had gotten, especially our front steps, until he pressure washed them. I was amazed at the before and after! They look so much better now!"

"Jason did a great job with the pressure washing of my house. He first contacted me about a month ago. (I think I had clicked Angi's List or something similar.) But anyway, when he first called me, I told him I work in taxation and would not have time to think about projects until after tax season was over, and to call me after April 17. And... unlike just about every other service provider - who would call me daily... Jason called me on April 18. And we went back and forth for a few days - mostly me asking questions... until we agreed he would pressure wash the house, patio, and driveway. And then he was available within that week! And stayed a bit longer to be sure everything was done right. Plus... he's the OWNER and started the business himself - not just someone who bought a franchise. (which is important to me - I like to support local business, even more so if it's an entrepreneur and not a franchisee.) And every time I pull into my driveway, I smile"
